San Marcos Mermaid SPLASH Festival
October 13, 2019 6:31 pm
Unique festivals and natural attractions give residents of San Marcos new homes plenty to do all year long.
Every year in mid-September, the community of San Marcos hosts a two-week celebration of all things mermaid. The Mermaid SPLASH festival includes events throughout the city with a variety of activities focused on the San Marcos River and the city’s culture, art scene and history.
This year the celebration included a “Mer-tini” contest, a Downtown Mermaid Promenade, the Mermaid Society Art Ball and the Mermaid Aqua Faire. The festival also hosts in-depth events like the River Guardianship Symposium. Throughout the festival, avid participants go all out to dress up as colorful, creative mermaids with costumes, body paint and outrageous hairdos.
The festival is organized by the Mermaid Society of Texas. Their inspiration is the legacy of Aquarena Springs, a mermaid tourist attraction that was open in San Marcos until the 1990’s. People from all over Texas and across the country attend the festival. The name is an acronym for “Stewardship, Preservation, Local, Arts, Sustainability and Heritage.”
One of the purposes of the festival is to draw attention to the importance of the San Marcos River in the community. The spring-fed river begins in San Marcos, where the clear water stays at 72 degrees year round. It provides opportunities for recreation and appreciation of its natural beauty.
Buffington Homes builds in two San Marcos communities, TRACE and Blanco Vista.

TRACE also has a brand new elementary school within the community.
