Free January Family Events in Austin

Those with homes in Austin TX are fortunate to have a rich array of community events to choose from this month. From culture and careers to fitness and films, there is something for everyone. Here are eight free, fun family activities in and around Austin this January:
Coffee with a Cop – January 13, 9:30-11:30 a.m. at Bennu Coffee. Here’s a chance for families to have a cup of coffee, meet police officers from the Central East Austin area, ask questions and talk about neighborhood concerns.
When I Grow Up Festival –January 14, 10 a.m.-2 p.m. at the Asian American Resource Center. Kids can explore their future careers with hands-on activities like cooking, using a stethoscope and planting seeds. They can watch demonstrations of performing arts and listen to a storyteller. Participants who register in advance will receive a gift bag filled with goodies and coupons.
Free Day of Fitness and Pilates – January 14, 1-4:30 p.m. at Ballet Austin. Guests can try various fitness and Pilates classes, visit the health and wellness exhibit area, talk to experts, listen to presentations and sample healthy food.
MLK March and Festival – January 15, 9 a.m.-3 p.m. at the University of Texas at Austin. After a short program on campus, the march will proceed to the State Capitol and then on to Huston-Tillotson University for the MLK Community Festival featuring vendors, musicians and more.
Third Thursdays at the Blanton – January 18, 10 a.m.-9 p.m. at the Blanton Museum of Art. This monthly themed event includes tours, extended hours, yoga and other activities.
Community Cinema – January 26, 6:30 p.m. at the CommunityFirst! Village. Enjoy activities including a Community Market with handmade crafts and artwork by CommunityFirst! residents beginning at 6:30 p.m.; the feature film “Snow White and the Seven Dwarves” begins at 7:30. Hot dogs, hamburgers, popcorn, drinks and snacks will be available for purchase. Tickets are free by reservation here; a small donation is appreciated.
Free Day of Dance – January 27 at various times and locations. More than 100 free dance classes will be offered around the Austin area in everything from Tango and Ballroom to Country and Swing.
Texas Wildlife Day – January 27, 9 a.m.-5 p.m. at the Texas Memorial Museum. Free admission to the museum and a day of family-friendly activities led by scientists and naturalists.
